Wk 9- The importance of understanding nonverbal communication

Nonverbal communcation can play a very important part when interacting with others on a daily basisi. Whether you are talking to a family member or a work colleague, the way in which we present ourselves is very important. It is important to understand nonverbal communication, as it highlights the reason as to why someone may not be able to interpret it.
Nevertheless, it is also likely to be interpreted incorrectly if the recipients do not understand the specific context (Demir 2011).

Through the use of movement, facial or physical expression, voice, tone, pitch and rhythm, use of space and touch as well as artefacts(Constigan, 2014, pg.1) we are able to explore and compliment our own individual way of communicating to one another. The use of personal space is extremely important when coming in contact with other. Everyone’s personal space is different, therefore if mistaken, the other person may take offence. Personal space varies with your family, friends, colleagues and a loved one. Your personal space will increase or decrease in each of these categories provided along with many more others.

Eye contact goes beyond into just looking at someones eyes. According to Akechi et al, this gesture demonstrates showing respect towards other person. Personally, I could practise this gesture more when speaking to someone, as it is very easy to become distracted, perhaps looking at your phone when you are conversing with someone.

In conclusion, the technological age has given us many convenient new to ways communicate whenever we want, to whomever we want - however this doesn't mean to become lazy when we are physically having a cnverstation with someone face to face. It is crucial that we keep an open mind; A level of personal space will range between cultures as others are brought up to show affection and caring towards each person they meet and greet them with open arms, whereas other cultures may differ. As a communicator, it is crucial that using the appropriate communication methods when speaking to someone is articulated clearly to prevent any implications.
